Newsflash!
Gemma completes her Rally Advanced title (RA) on 11/25!
Gemma
is such a special girl, it's hard to write about her and not go
on and on and on. She is a dream come true! When selecting the foundation
bitch for TarKom Labradors, we kept our eyes on our desire to breed
"Multi Purpose" Labradors. It was important that the dog
we chose be a good representative of the breed. We also wanted a
dog that came from a working pedigree. And, because we love the
rich brown color, we wanted to find the package in chocolate. Our
desires came together when we learned of Cedarwood
Kennels' upcoming breeding of GMHR,
Int., Am. & Mex. CH Cook's Midnight Bandit, MH, TT to Can. CH
Cedarwood's Ruthless Rochelle, JH, Am. & Can. CD, WC, CGC, TDI.
Bandit
was the first Grand Master Hunt Retriever, American CH and Master
Hunter in the breed. A Best In Show winner as well, he finished
his GMHR in 15 out of 16 events and his AKC Master hunter title
in 5 out of 6 events.
Shelly
is a beautiful chocolate girl, the "bitch version" of
her littermate brother, BISS CH Plainter's Ruthless Blazing Brentley,
MH, CDX, WCX,TDI. Shelly's sire, Am.,Can., BDA CH Flying Cloud's
Tai Pan, received Bests of Breed at the Boston, Potomac and Piedmont
Specialties and numerous Judge's Awards of Merit and was the #3
Labrador in the U.S. in 1993. Shelly's dam, MHR Am. & Can. CH
Plantier's Ruthless Ruthie, MH, CD, WCX, was the first chocolate
Champion/Master Hunter in the U.S., and the sixth Labrador of any
color to achieve this ranking. She is the only bench Champion to
receive the Colonial Open Trial trophy and was awarded it in both
1994 and 1995. She completed her championship with multiple Bests
of Breed, Group placements and Specialty placements, and qualified
in the Master National Hunting Retriever Trial in 1995.
With
this lineage behind her, we had high hopes for Gemma, and she hasn't
disappointed us. She has a wonderful temperament and is very eager
to learn. She earned her International Championship, and was the
equivalent of Winner's Bitch in 2 of 3 shows. She earned her WC
with minimal training, and completed her CD in three straight attempts,
receiving 4th place
and an award for highest scoring Labrador when earning her final
leg. With little knowledge as to how best to go about it, I have
been training Gemma for her JH. I have many deficiencies as a field
trainer as I've never done it before, but we'll eventually get that
title. Three different field trainers, watching Gemma work, told
me they think Gemma has the drive and working ability to earn her
MH, although with my training ability, or lack thereof, it is doubtful
she'll ever reach that goal, and I have no desire to "send
her out."
Despite
her drive to retrieve birds, bumpers and tennis balls, Gemma is
a relaxed, easy to live with house companion. She is wonderful with
children, and accompanied me to the pre-school classes I used to
teach on more than one occasion, where she was completely relaxed
as she retrieved and was swarmed by flocks of 3 and 4 year olds.
When I ruptured a disk in my back, Gemma served as my unofficial
service dog for weeks, happily bringing me everything from remote
controls to dropped pens and car keys. Gemma is also my "Assistant
Instructor" and Demo Dog at PetCo, where I work as a Canine
Education Instructor. She truly is the "all purpose" Labrador
we hoped for. You can see more photos of her by clicking here.
